By the time a site feels slow, most of the performance budget is already spent — in the framework choice, the third-party scripts, the unoptimised hero video someone added last week.
Budget before you build
I set a page-weight budget at kickoff — under a megabyte for most marketing sites, sub-second first paint on 4G — and every decision negotiates against it. Static where possible, ISR where content moves, client JavaScript only where interaction demands it.
The payoff compounds: faster pages rank better, convert better, and feel more premium. Speed is a brand attribute wearing an engineering costume.
